Newcastle agree £52m deal for Man City’s Gonzalez

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52m to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, marking their first Premier League-based signing of the summer after previously recruiting exclusively from continental Europe. The move reflects Newcastle's need for top-flight experience following the departures of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier, with head coach Matthias Jaissle keen to add a midfielder capable of developing further within his young squad.

Gonzalez, 24, has had just a season and a half in the Premier League since joining City from Porto, and despite previously saying he did not want to leave the Etihad, becomes the fourth senior midfielder to depart City this summer after Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders, with City strengthening elsewhere via big-money deals for Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi. He impressed statistically last season, leading Europe's top five leagues for high turnovers per game among midfielders with 900-plus minutes (2.13) and ranking in the Premier League's top five for line-breaking passes per match (12), qualities Newcastle hope will strengthen their midfield before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
