An inquest in Grimsby has heard that friends of 15-year-old Declan Sawyer initially believed he was joking around when he began struggling in the water at Swanholme Lakes nature reserve in Lincoln, only realising too late that he was drowning. Declan got into difficulty on 24 May while swimming towards an island with friends during a spell of exceptionally hot weather, and despite attempts to help him float, they were unable to save him for fear of being pulled under themselves. The case highlights the sudden and often misleading dangers of open-water swimming, even on warm days when conditions appear safe.

Emergency services were called at 2.20pm after a member of the public heard shouts for help, and Declan's body was recovered from the lake around 7pm following an extensive search involving police divers. The coroner recorded drowning as the cause of death and warned that open water carries hidden hazards such as cold water shock, strong currents and sudden depth changes that can cause disorientation and exhaustion with little warning. Declan's father, Carl, described him as a popular boy who loved football and fishing, while other relatives paid emotional tributes online, recalling a life filled with outdoor adventures and family memories.
