Ritchie Blackmore has recalled regretting a recording mishap during the making of Rainbow’s 1976 album Rising, particularly on its epic track ‘Stargazer’. Inspired by an early hearing of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Nobody’s Fault But Mine’, Blackmore and singer Ronnie James Dio aimed to create an equally ambitious piece, but the session’s limited tape ultimately prevented an improvised violin part from being captured.

Rainbow used the 28-piece Munich Philharmonic Orchestra while developing ‘Stargazer’, although repeated attempts to integrate the orchestra did not produce the intended effect. After extensive recording, the tape reel ran out as a violinist delivered what Blackmore described as a brilliant “gypsy” passage for the song’s ending; the musician was told his performance had not been recorded and was reportedly unhappy.
