Tom Scholz has reflected on the seven-year process behind Boston’s 1976 debut album, describing how his perfectionism drove him to repeatedly refine and discard recordings. The album became a landmark of classic rock, showing how Scholz’s painstaking studio work and ambitious sound overcame record-label rejections and financial pressure.

Scholz began writing songs around 1969, with the instrumental Foreplay becoming the first piece he wrote and later appearing on the album. Boston sold more than 18 million copies and featured major hits including More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind and Long Time, powered by Brad Delp’s vocals and Scholz’s layered guitar arrangements. Its success established Boston as a major rock band, despite later line-up changes.
