A series of killings of women in Cameroon has prompted public anger and renewed calls for stronger protection against gender-based violence. Footballer Nchout Njoya Ajara condemned the attacks, saying that remaining silent amounts to complicity, while opposition and civil society groups criticised what they see as slow government action.

At least eight women were reportedly killed in one week, including a 44-year-old woman allegedly stabbed in a Yaoundé hotel; a 22-year-old suspect was arrested. Official figures record at least 50 women killed from January to April, compared with 77 during the whole of last year. The government says a bill addressing violence against women is under review, but campaigners doubt it will pass during November’s budget-focused parliamentary session.
