More than 200 police officers from forces across England have been sent to Middlesbrough and surrounding Teesside areas after a series of violent incidents raised concerns about public safety. The reinforcements are intended to support the small Cleveland Police force as it investigates suspected gang-related violence, including a fatal house fire, a stabbing and attacks on homes.

A fire in Grangetown killed seven-year-old Valentina Foster and 34-year-old Natalie McDonald; two men, aged 31 and 23, were arrested on suspicion of murder, while another woman remained critically ill. Police said they were keeping an open mind about the fire’s cause but could not rule out links to organised crime, amid reports of tensions following a wrong-way A66 crash that killed five young people. Local councillor Alec Brown said over 200 additional officers, including detectives and armed-response personnel, were arriving, and called for further resources.
