A Tasmanian coroner has ruled that Belgian backpacker Celine Cremer died in an accident after disappearing during a solo bushwalk near Philosopher Falls in June 2023. The finding resolves a more than two-year search and rules out the involvement of another person, while highlighting safety concerns around an unmaintained track near the site.

Cremer, 31, was reported missing eight days after setting out; a large official search was later supplemented by private investigators and volunteers. Her phone was found in December 2025 and her remains were discovered near the Arthur River in 2026, but their condition meant the exact cause of death could not be established; hypothermia, injury and drowning were considered possible factors. The coroner found she became lost in wet winter conditions, fading light and poor reception after leaving the maintained route, and recommended clearer hazard signs and police protocols for working with private search teams.
