Ürei, the feature debut from Kazakh writer-director Yerkezhan Baizhan, will have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest after her short film of the same name drew attention two years earlier. The psychological horror follows 14-year-old Kalima, sent to stay with her frail grandmother in a remote Kazakh village, where affection, memory and reality increasingly become entangled with fear and obsession. It matters as Baizhan expands a well-received short into a more ambitious exploration of ageing, isolation and intergenerational terror.

Collider’s first-look image shows Kalima in the sparse, coldly lit bedroom of her grandmother’s rustic home, reinforcing the film’s unsettling and unfamiliar atmosphere. Akerke Kozayyr leads the cast, alongside Tynsyshkul Sultanberdiyeva, Asset Eszhan, Gulbakhram Baibosynova and Zangar Miyatuly. Fantastic Fest runs from 17 to 24 September at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas.
