Bad Wolves will release a heavy metal cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” on Monday, 31 August, after plans for Parton to contribute vocals were halted by her death earlier this week. The release is notable because the band says Parton had heard and liked their version, and was preparing to record her part.

The band’s singer, Sara “Killboy” Skinner, had previously posted several covers of “Jolene”, inspiring Bad Wolves to record it for their next album. Drummer John Boecklin said the group had sent the track’s stems to Parton’s studio team, and that proceeds will go to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The situation echoes Bad Wolves’ 2018 cover of The Cranberries’ “Zombie”, which was also intended to feature the original singer, Dolores O’Riordan, before she died on the day she was due to record.
