The conditions have heightened staff frustration after major workforce cuts and compulsory office attendance linked to Elon Musk’s former Department of Government Efficiency, raising concerns about employee safety and morale.

Photographs obtained by WIRED reportedly show debris covering a third-floor toilet, a hole in the ceiling and a dead mouse in a trap, while a notice advises staff to run taps for five to ten seconds until the water clears. GSA expects employees to remain in the OPM building until December 2028 while its previous 1800 F Street office is renovated, despite the temporary building being earmarked for accelerated sale; GSA and OPM did not respond to requests for comment.
