Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore have released three preview tracks from Threshold, their forthcoming score for a documentary about Olympic cross-country skier Jessie Diggins. The score is their second joint release this year and broadens their collaboration from a standalone album into music shaped by a real person’s story and a film-makers’ vision.

The newly shared songs are “Cold Open”, “Sick and Tired” and “Gallivare 10km”, with the full project due on 20 November. Threshold accompanies a documentary by American directors Lars and Torsten Brinkema; it follows January’s Tragic Magic, Barwick and Lattimore’s duo debut, which was supported by a joint tour. Lattimore said the film score allowed a wider instrumental range than their earlier record, while requiring the pair to work within the documentary’s narrative framework.

Julianna Barwick is an American musician known for building layered, atmospheric sound from her voice and electronic equipment. Mary Lattimore is a harpist and composer whose work often combines harp with electronic effects. They began working together as a duo and released their first joint album, Tragic Magic, earlier this year.

Their new project is music written for Threshold, a documentary about Jessie Diggins, an American cross-country skier and Olympic champion. A film score is designed to support the people, places and events shown on screen, so it can involve different instruments and a closer connection to the film’s story than a conventional album.

The documentary is directed by Lars and Torsten Brinkema, American film-makers. Diggins has been a prominent figure in cross-country skiing, a sport in which athletes race over snow-covered courses using skis and poles.
