A Stranded Woman Inspired This Massive ZZ Top Single
ZZ Top’s 1984 hit “Legs” was inspired by Billy Gibbons seeing a stranded woman during a heavy Los Angeles downpour. The encounter, particularly her appearance and determination to avoid getting wet, became the basis for one of the band’s best-known songs and a permanent fixture of its live performances.
Written by Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard for the album Eliminator, “Legs” was ZZ Top’s only single released that year and their fourth Top 10 hit. Its popular music video broadened the band’s audience, while later singles including “Sleeping Bag” and “Stages” reached No. 1; Nickelback recorded a cover for a 2011 tribute album.

By the early 1980s, the band had moved towards a more polished sound, combining rock guitars with synthesizers and drum machines. Eliminator, released in 1983, became their breakthrough album and helped turn them into international stars.
