Ridley Scott says it is “about time” he receives an Honorary Academy Award, ending a long career without a competitive Oscar win. The recognition matters because Scott is widely regarded as one of cinema’s most influential directors, with major films spanning science fiction, historical epics, war dramas and more.

Scott will receive the award at the 17th Governors Awards on 15 November, alongside Glenn Close and animator Floyd Norman. He has been nominated three times for Best Director—for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and Black Hawk Down—and once as a producer for The Martian; Gladiator won Best Picture, but Scott lost Best Director to Steven Soderbergh in 2001.
