The film starred Freeman as a police captain interrogating a prominent tax attorney, played by Gene Hackman, over the murder of a young girl. Freeman contrasted its $25 million budget with the ease of financing a hypothetical $130 million science-fiction film; despite eventually being made, Under Suspicion earned only about $1.3 million at the box office.
