Its departure comes as Johnson prepares to return to the genre with the upcoming *Verity*, alongside Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, generating renewed interest in the star's back catalogue.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and based on E.L. James's bestselling novel, *Fifty Shades of Grey* grossed roughly $570 million worldwide against a $40 million budget despite largely lukewarm reviews. Johnson's career has since had ups and downs, including the underperforming *Madame Web*, but rebounded in 2025 with the romantic drama *Materialists* (co-starring Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal), which took nearly $110 million globally. *Verity*, like last year's Colleen Hoover adaptation *The Housemaid*, is being tipped as a potential hit that could become Johnson's biggest since her *Fifty Shades* breakthrough a decade ago.
