Nashville International Airport is to be renamed in honour of Dolly Parton, after a Change.org petition calling for the tribute gathered more than 160,000 signatures. The move, announced by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee on Friday 28 August, comes days after the country music icon died aged 80 on 25 August following a brief illness with cancer, and reflects the widespread public affection for a performer widely seen as embodying the state.

Lee said it was "fitting" that the airport should "bear the name of our state's favourite daughter", adding that Parton's team were "touched by the idea and open to continuing the conversation". Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell also backed the renaming to Dolly Parton International Airport, framing it as a "love letter" in return for her own contributions to the city, including the SongTeller hotel and museum project she had been developing. The proposal will be formally discussed at a meeting on 17 September, with further details expected in the coming weeks; tributes to Parton have also come from figures including Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift and President Donald Trump, who ordered flags flown at half-mast for a week.
