Rise of Chicken Shop Date highlights how YouTube turned the tables on TV

The Guardian · 4 hours ago

Amelia Dimoldenberg has said her YouTube interview show Chicken Shop Date has reached a "watershed moment", now ranking alongside Graham Norton's chatshow or BBC Radio 1 as a must-do stop for celebrities. Speaking at the Edinburgh TV festival, she recalled that when she launched the show in 2014, publicists and managers refused to let talent appear on YouTube, whereas she can now afford to be selective and turns down guests only interested in doing a "press run" for a project. Her trajectory illustrates a broader shift in the media landscape, as viewers, particularly under-35s, increasingly favour YouTube over traditional television.

Dimoldenberg's guests have included Ed Sheeran, Charli xcx, Jennifer Lawrence and Paul McCartney, while viral moments with Louis Theroux and Andrew Garfield helped build the show's profile after Daniel Kaluuya became her first major name. YouTube's growing dominance was underscored when its EMEA head, Pedro Pina, delivered the keynote MacTaggart lecture at last week's Edinburgh TV festival, insisting the platform was "not the villain" of TV despite ending broadcasters' monopoly. Established broadcasters are meanwhile moving onto YouTube themselves, with Holly Willoughby launching a channel this summer and Amol Rajan set to leave BBC Radio 4's Today programme for his own YouTube show, even as Dimoldenberg pursues the opposite path by writing a BBC teen drama and a Hollywood romcom.
