Cult simulator Join Us recruits four real ex-cult members to “experience the game’s darkly satirical take on cult life”
Join Us, an upcoming co-op cult-building survival game, has enlisted four real former cult members to playtest it as part of a promotional campaign highlighting the title's "darkly satirical" tone. Developer Wolf Haus filmed the group — Jaga, Javier, Ariel and Elena, who between them have over 50 years' experience in various cult-like communities — recruiting followers, building compounds and defining beliefs within the game, then shared their candid reactions in a teaser video. The stunt is a notable marketing choice, using genuine lived experience to test how convincingly the game satirises cult dynamics.
The participants also shared glimpses of their real backgrounds, with Ariel recalling a former belief that a UFO would collect him on 12th May 2001, and Javier describing life at a "holistic rejuvenation centre" growing its own food; actual cult names were bleeped out. Wolf Haus itself described the group's reactions as "mixed", ranging from enthusiasm over the game's tomato-growing mechanic to one participant flatly predicting "no one's going to like this". Join Us lets up to four players build a cult and survive an apocalypse solo or in co-op, and is due out in March 2027 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
