Butcher Babies frontwoman Heidi Shepherd has discussed the writing process behind the band's new album, "Nightbloom", out on 2 October via Judge & Jury Records, revealing that the songwriting approach remained largely unchanged despite the band now working with a single vocalist following her split with co-singer Carla Harvey in early 2024. Speaking to Illinois radio station 92.7 WQLZ, Shepherd said the process felt "more focused" and came together organically once the band, originally intending only an EP, decided to expand the project after a strong fan and label response to early singles.

Shepherd said the lyrics draw heavily on personal experiences she confronted after starting therapy in January 2024, including her early marriage and subsequent divorce, her upbringing in the Mormon religion, and the loss of a close friend to suicide at a young age. Now 41, she described the record as reflecting on more than 30 years of her life, calling the process cathartic and noting it was especially meaningful to create the material with guitarist Henry Flury, her bandmate of over 15 years, with whom she had never previously discussed many of these memories.
