Jon Favreau, creator of The Mandalorian, has unveiled his next Disney+ project: a three-episode miniseries called Oswald, centred on Walt Disney's original animated character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Revealed at D23 with a first-look sequence, the show marks Favreau's move from Star Wars into Disney's own history, tackling a character who predates Mickey Mouse and is about to turn 100. Favreau will write, direct and executive produce, blending live-action with hand-drawn 2D animation overseen by Sergio Pablos, the animator behind Klaus.

Oswald will premiere on Disney+ on 17 February 2027, shortly before the character's centenary. The story follows three middle schoolers who are swept into an adventure after an earthquake frees Oswald from decades in hiding, with a cast led by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryder Allen and Mykal-Michelle Harris, alongside Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Al Madrigal, Steve Martin and Bernell Pesino. Oswald first appeared in 1927 but was lost to Universal a year later, prompting Disney to create Mickey Mouse; Disney reclaimed the rights in 2006 via an unusual deal involving sportscaster Al Michaels moving networks, and this series marks Oswald's first starring role in decades.
