Australians have taken to social media to complain of widespread illness even as winter officially ended, with New South Wales health authorities pointing to vaccine hesitancy as a key driver behind a surge in hospital admissions. The complaints follow record emergency department numbers in early August, and the trend matters because it points to a preventable strain on the health system driven partly by declining vaccine uptake since the Covid pandemic.

NSW hospitals recorded their busiest ever winter day on 3 August, with almost 10,000 people presenting at Sydney emergency departments, and admissions kept climbing through the month, particularly for influenza-like illness, including in children under ten and cases of bronchiolitis in under-fives. NSW Health Minister Ryan Park blamed vaccine hesitancy stemming from the Covid era, noting the flu jab costs as little as $15 and is free for under-fives, over-64s and vulnerable people, yet uptake remains poor. Residents reported symptoms including back and flank pain, abdominal cramps, nausea and severe respiratory issues, with many saying illness had spread through entire households and workplaces despite the arrival of spring on 1 September.
