Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun, has spoken about the toll taken by her Paris 2024 Olympic experience, revealing she suffered a panic attack in the Olympic village hours before the opening ceremony. Her performance in the breaking event, which made its Olympic debut at the Games, went viral worldwide, prompting widespread mockery, memes and even comment from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, but also exposed her to sustained trolling and conspiracy theories that damaged her mental health.

Gunn, a 38-year-old university lecturer, qualified for the Games via the Oceania Breaking Championships in Sydney in 2023 and lost all three of her round-robin battles, though she said the vibe at the event itself was positive. Online, however, she faced baseless claims of nepotism involving her husband and trainer Samuel Free, which she says hurt their credibility despite being easily disprovable. Speaking ahead of a new Netflix documentary about her Games experience, during which her mother also suffered three brain aneurisms and Gunn began taking anti-depressants, she said it has taken a long time to process what happened but that making the film has helped her "finally have a voice again".
