Sir Keir Starmer is standing down as an MP, weeks after being replaced as Prime Minister by Andy Burnham in a Labour leadership shake-up. Starmer had initially said he intended to remain as the member for Holborn and St Pancras, but has now reversed that position, opening the way for a by-election that could prove awkward for Labour given competition from the Greens in the constituency.

Speaking to his local paper, the Camden New Journal, Starmer said he was ready to "pass the baton to a successor" and would instead concentrate on international affairs, including defence, security, trade and technology. He also pledged to continue his long-standing work tackling violence against women and girls. He paid tribute to representing what he called "the best constituency in the country," noting he had succeeded former Labour MP Frank Dobson. Burnham effectively ousted Starmer from No 10 in July.
