Janine Sonis, the Canada international full-back playing for her hometown club Denver Summit in its debut NWSL season, has spoken about the significance of the club's strong fan support and her own personal enjoyment of the campaign. The 32-year-old, currently deployed at left-back, said playing in front of large crowds, including 63,000 fans at the team's home opener, confirmed that a professional women's team in Denver was "way overdue", and reflected on how the league has matured since she began her career.

Sonis has scored nine goals this season, the most of any Denver Summit player and joint-seventh in the NWSL, and recently passed 10,000 regular-season minutes in the competition. Denver sit ninth, just outside the playoff places, with seven wins, six draws and eight defeats from their debut campaign, and nine matches remaining. Sonis said the club has already built a clear identity and strong dressing-room culture, but that making the playoffs remains the ultimate target as the tightly packed table enters its final stretch.
