Premier League clubs have set a new all-time summer transfer spending record for the second consecutive year, with outlay reaching £3.46bn and eclipsing last year's £3.14bn mark. The scale of spending, which dwarfs the £1.13bn spent just five years ago, underscores the financial dominance of England's top flight, with three of the ten most expensive transfers in football history and 11 of the 20 clubs breaking their own transfer records this summer.

Manchester City's signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a joint-British record £125m capped a window in which the club spent £458m in total, a new Premier League record for a single transfer window, though offset by £304m in sales. Chelsea spent the second-most at £349m but banked a £33m profit after £382m in sales, while Tottenham spent £302m and newly promoted Ipswich Town outspent clubs such as Barcelona and PSG with £171m. Deadline day alone accounted for £475m of spending, up from £391m a year earlier.
