Brewer gives its logo a ‘Gen Z’ refresh – and is blasted for making a ‘pour’ decision

Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

Timothy Taylor's, the family-owned Yorkshire brewery behind Britain's best-selling cask ale, has redesigned the logos on its Landlord, Boltmaker and Golden Best beers in a bid to attract younger drinkers. The revamp, which replaces older imagery with brightly dressed, bearded figures likened to the "Madrí Man" character used by the Spanish-style lager brand, has drawn criticism from real ale enthusiasts who argue it abandons decades of brand heritage in pursuit of a fleeting trend.

John Rooth of the Society for the Preservation of Beers from the Wood said the change risked "jettisoning 168 years of history, brand awareness, affection and loyalty," while beer fan Fred de Fossard compared it unfavourably to Jaguar's rebrand, arguing that longevity is precisely what draws drinkers to Landlord. Chief executive Andrew Carter defended the move, insisting the recipes and brewing process remain unchanged and that the refresh is simply about presentation. The rebrand, the brewery's first since 2017, comes despite Timothy Taylor's outperforming a declining cask ale market, with turnover up 2.1% to £35.7 million in the year to September 2025; the new branding will be rolled out gradually over several months.
