A 20-year-old Haitian-born college student in Ohio, Pierre Damas Bel, has died in what his family believes was suicide after being required to wear an ankle monitor following the loss of his temporary protected status (TPS). Bel died on Monday after parking on Interstate 70 and walking into oncoming traffic; the case matters because it highlights the human toll of the Trump administration's move to end TPS for Haitian nationals, a policy the US Supreme Court cleared the way for, and has drawn criticism even from within Ohio's Republican leadership.

Bel's father said his son had become "distraught" and unrecognisable in his final weeks after being fitted with a GPS monitor, which Bel said left him feeling "shame and humiliation" and unable to take part in college sports at Wright State University. Springfield pastor Carl Ruby said the family blame President Donald Trump, Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin's immigration policies, saying Bel had been teased by fellow students over the monitor before his death. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine called it a "horrible, horrible tragedy," noting Bel had graduated locally and served in junior ROTC. The Supreme Court's ruling potentially exposes around 350,000 Haitian nationals to removal, with roughly 15,000 Haitian immigrants living in the Springfield area, many unable to return to a homeland gripped by violence and poverty; ICE said it does not comment on causes of death during pending investigations.
