Dell has unveiled the 14S, a new budget laptop announced at IFA 2026 that echoes Apple's MacBook Neo with its four-colour design and student-focused positioning. The 14S sits below Dell's recently launched XPS 13 in the line-up, giving the company another affordably priced option at a time when most laptop prices are rising. Pricing has not yet been confirmed, but Dell representatives said it would be close to, though slightly cheaper than, the XPS 13's $700 starting price, with full details expected closer to its autumn release.

The laptop comes in linen (beige), dusty rose, washed denim (blue) and velvet green, starting at 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, with configurable options up to 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. It is thicker and heavier than the XPS 13 but adds extras the pricier model lacks, including an HDMI 1.4 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack, alongside two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports. Display choices are simpler, non-touch panels — a 300-nit 1920×1200 60Hz LCD or a sharper 450-nit 2880×1800 120Hz option — and it runs on Intel Core 5 320 or Core 7 350 chips rather than the newer Panther Lake processors expected in the XPS 13. Other student-friendly touches include a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello face unlock and a claimed battery life of up to 23 hours of video streaming.

  • Dell's 14S is a budget MacBook Neo-style rival with four colour options
  • Sits below XPS 13; pricing near $700 but not yet confirmed
  • Ships with simpler screens, HDMI and headphone jack, up to 23-hour battery

New here? Start with this

Dell has used the IFA 2026 tech trade show in Berlin to launch the 14S, a new laptop aimed at students and budget-conscious buyers. It sits alongside Dell's existing XPS 13 but is designed to be cheaper, and its bright, multi-colour finishes are being compared to Apple's MacBook Neo, another low-cost machine aimed at the same market.

The launch matters because laptop prices have generally been climbing, making genuinely affordable options harder to find. By positioning the 14S below its flagship XPS 13, Dell is betting that shoppers, particularly students needing a reliable everyday machine, still want a lower-cost choice even as manufacturers push pricier, more powerful models.

The two companies involved are Dell, a major PC maker competing for a slice of the budget laptop market, and Apple, whose MacBook Neo has set something of a benchmark for colourful, affordably priced laptops that the 14S is now being measured against.
