Football transfer rumours: Jamie Vardy to São Paulo or Sheffield Wednesday?

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

The Premier League summer transfer window closed at 11pm, with several high-profile deals collapsing at the last moment. Everton's attempt to sign USA international Folarin Balogun from Monaco fell through after a medical issue and renegotiation, leaving the club having lost both Beto and Iliman Ndiaye during the window without replacing them. The Balogun collapse had a knock-on effect, scuppering Monaco's separate agreement to sell Lamine Camara to Chelsea, as the deal sheet was never signed in time.

Chelsea's Camara pursuit unravelled after a €55m (£47.1m) fee had already been agreed and the player had undergone a medical, with Monaco prioritising the Balogun sale before it too fell apart; Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Camara in 2027 instead. Chelsea also missed out on Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and rebuffed Liverpool's loan approach for Malo Gusto, while Liverpool themselves blocked Cody Gakpo's proposed move to Manchester City. Manchester United are already eyeing a 2027 defensive overhaul, and free agent Jamie Vardy, who scored seven goals for relegated Cremonese, is drawing interest from Wrexham, São Paulo and Sheffield Wednesday.
