Evan Rachel Wood has publicly noted that no one involved in the original 1998 "Practical Magic" film contacted her after she was replaced in the upcoming sequel, "Practical Magic 2." In an Instagram story, Wood said Joey King, who takes over her role of Kylie, was the only person connected to the project to reach out to her, appearing to take a swipe at original co-stars Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.

Wood played Kylie, daughter of Sandra Bullock's Sally, in the original film, with Alexandra Artrip playing her sister Antonia; in the sequel these roles go to Joey King and Maisie Williams respectively. Wood previously said she had offered to appear even in a minor capacity but was told she was being recast, calling the decision "not in my control." Director Susanne Bier said the recasting was "not personal," explaining that the story's characters are now meant to be recent college graduates, necessitating new actors. "Practical Magic 2," based on Alice Hoffman's novel "The Book of Magic," opens in US theatres on 10 September via Warner Bros.
