Uber has ceased operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect, following what it described as a "difficult decision" reached after a review of its business. The withdrawal removes the ride-hailing giant from two significant African markets and comes as its global chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, announced a 10% cut to the company's worldwide workforce, suggesting the move is part of a broader restructuring rather than an isolated local setback.

Uber had operated in Nigeria since 2014 and Uganda since 2016, but drivers had long complained of low fares relative to fuel costs and excessive commission charges, while facing growing competition from rivals such as Bolt and inDrive. The company has also exited Ivory Coast and Tanzania in the past year, leaving Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa as its only remaining African markets; it says the decision does not affect operations elsewhere on the continent. Uber's help centre will remain open in both countries until 23 September to resolve outstanding issues for affected drivers and staff.
