Defending champion Shaun Murphy has been eliminated from the British Open in Cheltenham, losing 4-2 to fellow Englishman David Gilbert in the second round. The result means the world number seven will not defend his title, in what was a mixed session of results for higher-ranked and in-form players at the ranking event.

Gilbert opened with a break of 117 before Murphy hit back with runs of 64 and 103 to lead, but Gilbert regrouped with three further half-century breaks to close out the match and reach the last 32. Elsewhere, new world number one Zhao Xintong beat Daniel Wells 4-2 after recovering from 3-0 down, while Judd Trump came from behind with breaks of 96 and 87 to see off Ricky Walden. John Higgins edged Noppon Saengkham 4-3, and Mark Selby won back-to-back last-frame deciders against Lei Peifan and Jackson Page to progress to the third round.
