VMware is set to release an updated version of vSphere Standard, its low-end server virtualisation bundle that has been largely neglected since Broadcom's 2023 acquisition in favour of the pricier Cloud Foundation (VCF) private cloud suite. Speaking at the VMware Explore conference, chief product officer Paul Turner said the company has "corrected" sales incentives that previously pushed customers towards VCF even when the simpler product would have sufficed, acknowledging VMware had placed "too big a focus on VCF." The shift matters because many smaller customers, lacking clear upgrade paths or renewal quotes for standalone vSphere, have increasingly looked to alternatives such as the open-source Proxmox platform.

The last major vSphere Standard release came with version 8 in 2022, and no update accompanied last year's vSphere 9/VCF 9 launch, as VMware prioritised VCF security work instead. Broadcom infrastructure software president Ram Velaga said the product suits users running around 128 cores, while Turner floated memory tiering as a possible new feature and claimed the refreshed offering would outdo Proxmox, which itself just opened a North American office and introduced round-the-clock support. Further details, including go-to-market plans following VMware's cull of channel partners, are expected at VMware Explore in Germany in mid-October.
