Thousands of drivers in Western Australia have had seatbelt fines from AI-assisted traffic cameras overturned following a surge of complaints, prompting police to review how the system's penalties are handled. Since the cameras were introduced in October 2025, the technology has faced criticism for issuing infringements based on split-second, ambiguous images, with several drivers describing lengthy and stressful appeals before their fines were withdrawn.

Of 81,412 seatbelt infringements issued, around 5,700 were revoked after being challenged, sparing motorists a $550 fine and four demerit points. Police Commissioner Col Blanch said most withdrawals stemmed from insufficient evidence, noting only about 5 per cent of cases are contested and a fraction go to trial, and confirmed a formal review of the cameras' penalties is now underway. Drivers such as Lisa Taylor and Emily Esplan's husband described fines being dropped after seatbelts slipped or shifted momentarily while attending to children, while the Road Safety Commission defended the cameras, citing a drop in seatbelt-related road deaths from 20 per cent to 13.8 per cent since their rollout.
