A Virginia mother has been convicted of a criminal offence and given a suspended jail sentence after allowing her five-year-old son to walk alone to a pond within their gated community to collect goose feathers. Karyann Parkinson, 36, was found guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class 1 misdemeanour, sparking debate over how far child neglect laws should extend into everyday parenting decisions and "free-range" upbringing.

Parkinson, from Williamsburg, was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended by the judge, and placed on the state's child abuse and neglect registry for seven years. The incident occurred in June when her son Sam walked a short, low-traffic route through the secure Ford's Colony community, which has 24-hour security and a 25mph speed limit; a passer-by alerted security, leading to police and Child Protective Services involvement. Parkinson and her husband, both experienced in child welfare work, argued children need to take reasonable risks, while CPS maintained a five-year-old should never be unsupervised.
