Actor Michael Sheen has said the Welsh public should be consulted on whether they want the Prince of Wales title to return to Wales the next time it becomes vacant, arguing it "symbolises something that was essentially a put-down to Wales" rooted in England's historic subjugation of the country. His comments come ahead of a new Cardiff stage production in which he plays Owain Glyndŵr, the last Welsh-born holder of the title, and he hopes the play will prompt wider public debate about Welsh history and identity.

The Prince of Wales title, currently held by Prince William since 2022, is granted at the monarch's discretion rather than passed down automatically, and dates back to Edward I's 1301 investiture of his son following the 1282 killing of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last prince of independent Wales. Sheen will star in Owain & Henry at the Wales Millennium Centre this November, a Welsh National Theatre co-production also featuring Linus Roache and Rakie Ayola, and has said gaps in his own schooling left him with limited knowledge of Welsh history, which he believes is a shared experience for many in Wales.
