Uber has launched the UK's first robotaxi service in London, becoming the first company to operate self-driving minicabs in the capital. Passengers can now book rides via the Uber app, though the rollout is small and cautious, reflecting the early, closely monitored stage of autonomous vehicle deployment on British roads.

The service began operating with just 15 licensed autonomous vehicles, each fitted with a human safety driver on standby to take control if needed. Fares match those of standard UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort trips, shown upfront in the app. BBC technology correspondent Zoe Kleinman became the first British journalist to take a ride, reporting on the experience.
