Marx, a former US Marine and Christian ministry leader, made the remarks on his own podcast, describing an encounter he says occurred while praying for a girl at a high-security youth prison in Texas. The story matters because it has drawn fresh attention to Marx's background as he runs an underdog campaign to succeed term-limited Democratic governor Jared Polis.

According to Marx's account, first reported by Talking Points Memo, the girl began "manifesting a demon" so convincingly that other inmates huddled in a corner in fear, and when he asked the entity its name, it replied, "I am Satan." Marx is the founder of All Things Possible Ministries and has built his gubernatorial bid around an all-Marine ticket with running mate George Markert, framing the pair as outsiders who can counter a rising democratic socialist movement in the state. He faces Democrat Phil Weiser, Colorado's current attorney general, who is considered the favourite to win.
