Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio has publicly clashed with Connecticut's Democratic Governor Ned Lamont after an Ohio man was killed in a crash allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant who held a Connecticut driving licence. Moreno demanded Lamont apologise and account for the state's "drive-only" licence scheme, which allows people unable to prove legal US residence or provide a Social Security number to obtain a licence, arguing it endangers Americans and calling on Lamont to disclose how many such licences have been issued to people in the country illegally.

The crash occurred on 29 August in Fulton County, Ohio, when Guillermo Naula-Ochoa, 34, an Ecuadorian national, allegedly failed to yield at a stop sign, striking a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Austin Grimes, who died at the scene. Naula-Ochoa, who has an immigration detainer lodged against him by federal authorities, was charged with vehicular manslaughter. Moreno's letter to Lamont claimed Connecticut has issued more than 60,000 such licences and pressed him on how many recipients have committed crimes, registered to vote, or cost taxpayers money, while also criticising a 2024 proposal to remove the "drive-only" marking from the documents.
