Charlotte Winstanley, a 28-year-old former prison officer, has been released from HMP Drake Hall in Staffordshire after serving just six months of a two-and-a-half-year sentence for misconduct in public office. She was jailed in February over an illicit affair with violent gang member Jabhari Blair, 30, an inmate she had been responsible for supervising, in a case a judge described as the worst of its kind he had encountered. Her early release, and the celebratory social media posts that followed, have drawn attention to the disparity between sentences handed down and time actually served in prison.

Winstanley was 22 and working at HMP Lindholme, near Wetherby, when she began the relationship with Blair, who is serving 12-and-a-half years for stabbing a man during a mass brawl. The pair exchanged explicit messages over roughly three years, met secretly in locked prison offices, and Winstanley told a friend she was having "sex daily" with him, even continuing contact after her suspension. Following her release in mid-August, Winstanley posted TikTok videos showing her being welcomed home with confetti by family and friends, writing that "love conquers all" despite the judge's remarks that both parties knew their conduct was "unlawful and corrupt."
