The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced a sweeping overhaul of its selection process, prompted by the omission of former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick from the 2026 induction class despite widespread expectation that he would be a first-ballot pick. Hall of Fame president Jim Porter said the review aims to eliminate "unintended biases" and uphold the "highest standards of integrity" in how new members are chosen, marking one of the most significant changes to the institution's voting system in years.

Under the new rules, the selection committee will shrink from 50 members to 28, ending the tradition of every NFL team having its own representative, while the formal practice of selectors making persuasive presentations for candidates will be scrapped in favour of a neutral resume introduction followed by group discussion. Candidate categories will be reduced to three — player, coach and contributor — with the separate "senior" player category abolished so all eligible players compete together, a change partly driven by 19 senior selections over the past seven years. The Hall expects to weigh 13 player candidates plus one coach and one contributor annually, with induction classes ranging from three to seven members, typically five or six.
