Several US cities and local governments have declared 25 September "Dolly Parton Day" or "Dolly Parton Appreciation Day", a tribute chosen for its resemblance to "9 to 5" rather than for marking her birth or death. The gesture reflects the widespread affection for the country music icon, who died on 25 August at the age of 80 following a brief illness with cancer, and highlights her enduring legacy in music, entertainment and philanthropy.

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal issued the latest proclamation on Friday, joining New Orleans, which marked the date with "Dolly Day" celebrations including a parade and events hosted by the Krewe of Dolly, and Lexington, Kentucky, which tied its recognition to literacy programmes she supported. Several counties in her native East Tennessee, including Cocke County, have also made local proclamations, while Tennessee already holds broader state-level tributes linked to her 19 January birthday. Nashville has separately honoured her with its own Dolly Parton Day on 5 August for the past seven years, first proclaimed by former mayor David Briley in 2019.
