Artrip originally played Antonia Owens in the 1998 original alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, and the role has been recast with Maisie Williams for the sequel, while Joey King takes over as Kylie from Evan Rachel Wood. The recasting has proven divisive among longtime fans, though Artrip has publicly encouraged people to give the new film a chance rather than criticise the incoming cast.

Practical Magic 2 premieres in theatres on 10 September, with Bullock and Kidman reprising their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who must confront an ancestral family curse. Director Susanne Bier has defended the recasting as a practical necessity given the younger characters' ages, saying it "wasn't really a question." Evan Rachel Wood, who is not returning, said she was "sad" about the change and disappointed that no one from the original production contacted her about the decision, though she praised King for reaching out personally.
