Marie Osmond, best known for performing alongside her brother Donny, launched a successful solo career in her own right, scoring her first No. 1 single at just 14 years old. Her 1973 debut solo album, Paper Roses, produced the title track as her first single, which topped the charts and marked a significant early milestone in her career independent of her famous family's musical success.

"Paper Roses" was actually a cover of a 1960 song by Anita Bryant, written by Fred Spielman and Janice Torre, and it remains Bryant's most successful single too. Osmond's version reached No. 1 on both Billboard's country and pop charts, making it her only solo pop No. 1. Producer Sonny James recalled her youthful but distinctive voice during recording, while Osmond herself described feeling daunted stepping out from her brothers' shadow. She did not return to the top of the charts until 1984, with the country duet "Meet Me In Montana" alongside Dan Seals.
