Trump thrashes Zhao to reach last four of British Open

BBC Sport · 7 hours ago

Judd Trump thrashed world number one Zhao Xintong 5-1 to reach the semi-finals of the British Open, delivering a statement win over the player who ended his two-year spell at the top of the rankings in August. The victory sets up a last-four meeting with the winner of Aaron Hill against Jak Jones on Saturday, while Mark Selby will face Liam Highfield in the other semi-final.

Trump, 37, who has 31 ranking titles to his name, took the opening two frames with breaks of 101 and 57 before Zhao hit back with a century of his own. He then restricted the Chinese player to just 29 points across the next three frames and added two further half-centuries to seal the win comfortably. Earlier in the day, Highfield beat teenager Stan Moody 5-2 and Selby thrashed Jack Lisowski 5-0. Trump said losing the world number one spot had left him more determined to prove he remains the best.
