Actress Rebecca Gayheart is returning to the world of her 1999 cult teen film Jawbreaker, making her stage musical debut as Principal Sherwood in Jawbreaker The Musical, which opens in Los Angeles and runs until 20 September. Gayheart told Deadline she is "scared shitless" about singing, having never performed in musical theatre before, though she remains confident the role will be entertaining regardless of her vocal ability.

The role merges two characters from the original film, mousy administrator Ms. Sherwood and tough detective Vera Cruz, previously played separately by Carol Kane and Pam Grier, giving Gayheart's character a new investigative arc not present in the movie. Writer-director Darren Stein, who wrote the musical's book, said he was thrilled to reunite with Gayheart, who originally played Julie Freeman in the film. The production, staged at the Hudson Backstage Theatre, features choreography from Jay Jackson, and Gayheart has floated the idea of former co-stars Julie Benz, Judy Greer and Rose McGowan taking on the role during a potential future West End run.
