The World Stone-Skimming Championships on the Scottish island of Easdale have been held again this year with tighter anti-cheating measures, a year after competitors were disqualified for tampering with their stones. Organisers brought in geologist Luisa Hendry, known online as the Scottish Geologist, to help verify stones and answer queries, alongside undisclosed extra checks, after last year's scandal generated global publicity for the quirky contest.

Rules require competitors to use naturally formed stones found on the island, but some entrants last year had smoothed, rounded or notched their stones to gain an advantage. This year's event, held in the Firth of Lorne in the Inner Hebrides, drew around 200 qualifiers, 200 ballot-selected challengers and roughly 2,000 spectators, despite poor weather that limited performances, with only one competitor reaching the 63m "wall" compared with 16 last year. American Liam Knight and New Zealand's Abby MacDonald won the men's and women's titles respectively, while BBC Alba and a second film crew documented the event amid growing broadcast interest.
