Two parents and their young son were found shot dead inside a burning house in Maywood, a small city near Los Angeles, in what police believe was a domestic murder-suicide. The case has drawn attention partly because Maywood has no police force of its own, having disbanded its scandal-hit department in 2010, meaning the incident is now being handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Firefighters were called to the property at around 2.20am on Saturday and brought the blaze under control within 20 minutes, after which they discovered the three bodies in a bedroom along with a firearm. The parents were in their 40s and their child was under 10; none of the victims have been publicly named. Investigators believe the fire started downstairs and that the father was likely responsible for the shootings, though the cause of the blaze and full circumstances remain under investigation.
