Duane "Keffe D" Davis has declared himself "innocent" days after being convicted of orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, telling The Hollywood Reporter he expects to be freed on appeal. Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was found guilty of one count of murder with a deadly weapon over the drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on 7 September 1996, in a case that finally brought a conviction for one of hip-hop's most notorious unsolved killings decades after the fact.

Speaking from Clark County Detention Center, Davis claimed police and prosecutors lied during the trial and said his legal team had already filed an appeal alleging his civil rights were violated. Prosecutors said Davis did not fire the fatal shots but ordered the attack and supplied the gun used by his nephew Orlando Anderson, in retaliation for Shakur's entourage beating Anderson earlier that night; they relied heavily on eight hours of recordings in which Davis repeatedly admitted his role, including in a 2008 police interview and his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend, which he now claims he never wrote or read.
