This matters because YouTube, like most video platforms, otherwise blocks downloading, and the feature comes with significant restrictions that limit its usefulness compared with what many users might expect, such as saving files for editing or reaction content.

The Premium download option, accessed via the three-dot menu beneath a video, saves content only within the YouTube app itself rather than as a transferable file, meaning downloads cannot be edited, shared or moved between devices, and do not sync across a user's own devices. Downloaded videos remain available offline for just 29 days before requiring a fresh internet connection, and they disappear entirely if the subscription lapses; Premium Lite additionally excludes Shorts and music downloads. Third-party YouTube downloader websites exist as an alternative but are frequently laden with adware or spyware and breach YouTube's terms of service, which prohibit unauthorised downloading or screen recording without rights holder permission.
